17. Top Quilting Methods

Welcome to Episode 17 of the Stop Scrolling, Start Sewing podcast!  In this episode of the podcast I’m breaking down the top quilting methods and when to use each one.

Stitch in the Ditch

This is when you sew your quilt stitches directly into the seam created by your patchwork piecing.  It’s the easiest of all the quilt methods and is where many beginner quilters start.  It’s excellent for durability on quilts that you plan to be well loved.  It accentuates your patchwork piecing.

Check out this easy stitch in the ditch tutorial from The Spruce Crafts.

Stitch by the Ditch

This method is very similar to stitch in the ditch, instead of being directly in the seams, you stitch a measured distance to one or both sides of the seam.  This is one of my favorite ways to quilt.

Free Motion Quilting

Free motion quilting is a more advanced type of quilting method.  It’s gorgeous and it can be used to create absolutely beautiful designs.  It can be best utilized on a more simple piece of patchwork.

I worked with Nicole in a one on one environment on a large quilt. I have limited sewing experience and Nicole’s expertise was invaluable for this large project. Nicole is very patient and explained the different steps and their purposes clearly. She improved my original idea to better accomplish my overall goal. I highly recommend Nicole as an instructor and would personally have another session in a heartbeat!

I seriously didn’t even know the names of parts of my sewing machine before I worked with Nicole. She walked me through everything step by step. And it was amazing. She taught me the ins and outs of my machine and how to add each basic concept together. It was invaluable, because now I can figure things out and get creative without fearing the dreaded unravel!
