27. Machine Binding vs. Hand Binding

If you prefer to read a transcript, click here.

I feel like there is a West Side Story type of rumble brewing between hand binders and machine binders.  Snapping and dance moves included, of course.

But here goes the basic run down of the benefits of each method.  For my in depth analysis, please listen to the episode.  Much appreciated!

Hand binding:

  • great for a relaxing evening project
  • the binding has your unique, “signature” hand stitch
  • you get bragging rights
  • you get to practice your hand sewing
  • it’s familiar/ it’s how you learned

Machine binding:

  • easier for those with arthritis or other mobility issues
  • you can be finished in a short time
  • gives binding a clean, consistent look
  • it gives you the chance to learn a new technique
  • fewer needle pricks

I also mentioned some charities that take quilts:

I worked with Nicole in a one on one environment on a large quilt. I have limited sewing experience and Nicole’s expertise was invaluable for this large project. Nicole is very patient and explained the different steps and their purposes clearly. She improved my original idea to better accomplish my overall goal. I highly recommend Nicole as an instructor and would personally have another session in a heartbeat!

I seriously didn’t even know the names of parts of my sewing machine before I worked with Nicole. She walked me through everything step by step. And it was amazing. She taught me the ins and outs of my machine and how to add each basic concept together. It was invaluable, because now I can figure things out and get creative without fearing the dreaded unravel!
